While it might seem unusual to people who don’t own boats, a pontoon boat is actually a great place to host a party. Whether you want to celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, a retirement, or simply get your friends and family together, there are some easy ways to make your pontoon boat the perfect party destination.

Decorations

Decorating a boat is a little different than decorating your house or apartment for a gathering. You’ll want to stick to lightweight and non-breakable decorations, made from wood, plastic, or paper. Paper garlands or streamers can be hung up around your railings to brighten up the boat, with balloons tied at the corners for a birthday. You can also stick up paper images and purchase colored or patterned paper plates and cups in your party’s theme.

Food & Drink

The food and drink you serve on a boat should be simple to eat without causing injury, so you’ll probably have to avoid that elaborate steak dinner. Instead, you can set out trays of crudites and dips, cheese and crackers, mini sandwiches, green salads, cold pasta salads, and fresh fruit.

If your boat has a grill, your options can expand to burgers, hot dogs, vegetable kebabs, and chicken breasts. If you have food that requires a knife, try to cut things up at the dock or at home and bring the cut-up food in a container onto your boat.

Logistics

Make sure that you have bags or containers that close firmly for your trash and recycling so that you don’t litter in the waterway you’re cruising in. You’ll also want to have a way for people to wash their hands if your boat doesn’t have a sink; hand sanitizer can work in a pinch. Bring some paper towels and spray cleaner and a broom and dustpan to tidy up after your party is over.
