Preventing Seasickness on Your Boat
No matter who you are or how strong your stomach is, seasickness can creep up on you. It’s a form of motion sickness that occurs when you’re in a boat. The nausea, dizziness, and general malaise that seasickness (called “mal de mer” by the French) creates can absolutely ruin what would otherwise have been a fun boating adventure.
So what can you do to stave off the impact of these symptoms? Here are some of our top strategies for coping with seasickness so that you and your passengers can enjoy all your experiences on the water.
Don’t Drink Alcohol
Before your trip and during your trip, you should avoid alcohol. Not only does alcohol dehydrate you, but the hangovers can add to your nausea and fatigue. It’s a good idea to avoid drinking for up to 48 hours before a boat trip for best results.
Eat Lightly
You may not want to eat anything when you’re nauseated, but having some food in your stomach can reduce acid and make you feel better. Try snacking on saltine crackers, cookies, toast, applesauce, bananas, or granola bars so that you have something in your stomach.
Try Herbal Remedies
If you don’t want to use prescription or OTC medications for your nausea and motion sickness, you can use some herbal remedies that people have used for centuries instead. Ginger and peppermint are both excellent for nausea, so carry some flavored candies with you or bring some ginger or peppermint tea on board with you.
